I learned from my mother
to let the bed air out a bit
before covering it up again
And not to sit on its side
to lace up my shoes
lest the edges start to droop
and make me roll onto the
floor
in the middle of the night
And most of all never
to draw the drapes against
the slanted sun
so that the colors of the
couch
would not fade
But now that I am old
I never pull the drapes
against the sun
This couch will outlast me
If it does not
I shall sit on the floor
in the sunlight
